Greek Genocide 1914-23

Turks to War on Christians

The Cook County Herald, August 28th 1914, page 7.

TURKS TO WAR ON CHRISTIANS.
U.S. Ambassador Morgenthau Appeals to the Sultan.
Washington, Aug. 27.—Grave anxiety is felt by the administration because of the prospects of a general massacre of Christians in Turkey, the danger of which has been communicated to the department of state by Henry Morgenthau, ambassador to Turkey, who has taken the matter up with the sublime porte and with the sultan. The only assurance he has been able to obtain has been that the sultan will do all in his power to protect American citizens. The Mohammedans in Turkey, says the American ambassador, are determined to avail themselves of the disturbed conditions of Europe, which would preclude the adoption of punitive measures, to visit their wrath on all Christians and Jews in both European and Asiatic Turkey. According to Mr. Morgenthau, no “unbeliever” will be permitted to escape.
