Greek Genocide 1914-23

Deportations of Greeks

The Scotsman, May 22nd 1917, page 3.

DEPORTATION OF GREEKS
ACCORDING to a telegram received by the Greek Provisional Government in Salonika from Samos, numerous Greek refugees from Asia Minor, who have escaped to the islands, state that the Greek inhabitants of Aivali are being deported wholesale to towns in the interior by the Turks, under the guidance of German officers. The inhabitants of Vourla are threatened with a similar measure. The refugees add that the situation of the Greeks in Asia Minor was never more deplorable, and that famine is causing numerous deaths daily. According to the same informants, the moral of the Turkish Army is extremely depressed, and many desertions occur daily.--Press Association.
