Greek Genocide 1914-23

The Need Colossal

The Colorado Transcript, December 13th 1917, page 2.

THE NEED COLOSSAL
The Land that Gave Christ to the World Needs Your Help Now
The sufferings of the innocent Armenians, Syrians, Greeks and many others in Western Asia since the beginning of the war stagger the imagination. Ambassadors, consuls and missionaries recently returned were eye-witnesses of the terrible deportations in which thousands suffered death from exposure, brutality and disease.
“But,” said one of them, “I do not worry about the men and boys who were killed. They are free. My thoughts are of the women and children who still live, only to face death from exposure and starvation in the months of fall and winter cold.”
During the past summer, relief agents have been able to supply many with food and clothing, but the winter brings increased suffering and more funds are needed if thousands are not to perish.

Homeless children have survived the deportations to suffer slow starvation. Many of them are so small that they do not know how to feed themselves. They sleep alone in the dark, sobbing from hunger, fear and loneliness.
Five dollars a month will support one person, giving just the essentials of life. At least- $30,000,000 needed for winter’s minimum requirements.
Recent Cablegrams
“Famine increasing. People dying of hunger at our gate. Many will die of cold without clothes or bedding. Vastness of need overwhelming. New refugees arriving daily.”
“Estimate number of deported, destitute Armenians, Syrians and Greeks, now in Asia Minor, Syria and Palestine at 1,500,000. Bread-winners generally have perished through massacre deportation.”
“Last amounts for orphanage insufficient. Probably obliged to send 800 children away tomorrow.”
“Three hundred and fifty thousand refugees. At least the children should be saved. No hope save America. Delay in relief means death to hundreds daily.”
