Greek Genocide 1914-23

Testimony: Sophia Nikolaou

My name is Sophia Nikolaou. I'm from Ivrindi in Asia Minor. My husband, my 8 year old son Manolaki and myself had taken refuge in the mill of Gioun-Giorkes. Turks suddenly appeared and were coming towards us. They surrounded the mill whilst shouting violently. They broke open the door of the mill and hurled themselves towards us. In front of my husband's and child's eyes, I was violated multiple times. They then massacred my son and with their knives they hacked my husband to pieces. They pulled out his guts and gave them to me to eat. They began shouting that if I didn't eat the flesh of my husband I too would be killed. At the moment gun shoots were heard. Other Turks were warning their comrades that Greek troops were approaching. With this the Turks left and ran. That's how I was saved. The Greek officers and soldiers understood my calamity when they saw me and took me with them.
